Strikers Cup The Agony and the Ecstasy |
There were some quality teams in the competition who have played together for a few seasons and were used to the bigger field, our boys had just 6 weeks, I never doubted their ability and I knew we had the potential to do well in this tournament. Before we kicked a ball in the Strikers cup, myself and assistant coach Andy Snell knew the boys worked hard over the last 5 weeks and believed our preparation was good. We just beat our under 10 Div 1 side 5-0 in a friendly and although they had a few players missing we totally dominated the game which gave the boys great confidence going in to the Strikers Cup. A special mention to Tyler Bowles who although did not participate was very much a part of the squad When the draw came out it was pleasing to know we had two local teams in Curl Curl and Dee Why and unknown quantity in Glenhaven however a late drop out by Dee Why meant the committee were frantically trying to secure another team, Budgewoi obliged at short notice and I was a little concerned when my sources informed me that in their last four games they had scored 20 plus goals and conceded just 2. In the opening game against Curl Curl it was apparent that the boys were a little nervous however after a lot of pressure an early goal from Jesper Nicholson laid the foundation for a second goal for Jesper followed by goals from Tal Weiner and Gianni Stensness which helped secure a comfortable 4 -0 win. The boys were a little more relaxed against Glenhaven in the second game and started to create more chances, the boys scored twice through Jesper and Gianni to take a 2 goal lead, then a speculative 25 yard lob left Sam Benton with little chance, the score now 2-1. With a few minutes to go some nifty footwork from Harry Van Der Saag resulted in a penalty, Harry missed the penalty but such is his confidence he collected the ball from the goal kick dribbled passed 2 defenders and coolly placed the ball in the corner, 3 -1 to Strikers. The next game against Budgewoi was a different matter, they were a good side and there was a lot of cancelling each other out, especially in the mid-field where Brodie Strachen, Tal Weiner and Gianni Stensness had an excellent game, when it appeared to be locked in a stalemate we had a free kick on the edge of the box and Gianni drove the ball into the top corner for the winning goal and through to the knockout stages. West Pennant Hills were a difficult side to break down, they created a scare in the first half when it looked certain we would be 1-0 down for the first time when Ryan Martinuzzo came from nowhere to clear the ball off the line. With 2 minutes to go in the second half and the score at 0-0 with 2 corners against us, it looked like our time had come in the competition when a quick break down the left hand side by Jesper took the play into the final third, the ball found it's way to Harry who blasted the ball into the top corner for a 1-0 win. The semi final against Smithfield was a hard fought match, we continued to dominate down the flanks with some excellent work by Lachie Burt and Issiah Vambucca and in the second half Jacob Seeto and Rhys Vorillas continued to work the flanks and gave tireless performances to keep the pressure on Smithfield. Someone overheard the Smithfield coach shouting instructions to get a corner during our lapse in concentration, and Smithfield put a ball through behind our defence and headed towards our goal. Jayden Lagana give chase and managed to put himself between the ball and the player resulting in the player dumping him to the ground in a heap, the referee gave the right decision and gave us a free kick. Unfortunately Jayden had to be helped off the field, a hero, as the referee blew up soon afterwards and although the score was 0-0 we went through to the final on a count back. After the semi-final, we continued with our ritual of going into the change room and debriefing on the previous game. The boys took a little longer to settle and were so excited about reaching the final that they could hardly contain their excitement. We talked briefly about how we were going to approach the game against a very organised Queens Park side who apparently had lost one game in 4 years. We started with a 3:5:2 system which complements our style of play and utilises the strengths within the team. We spent sometime on the training ground practising the speed of counter-attack out of defence, using our quality players in the middle of the park, to get the ball down the flanks where we could use our pace into the final third - this had paid dividends for us throughout the tournament. The only team change was to include Diego who does possess excellent attacking qualities however his versatility allowed me to select him to replace the injured Jayden Lagana at right back. Rhys and Jacob were to come on as impact players later in the game It was quite an even start to the game where both teams struggled to dominate, Strikers always looked dangerous when we went forward with Jesper and Harry creating a few problems for the Queens Park defence. Our midfield playmakers Tal, Brodie and Gianni started to get control of the ball and started to get the ball wide with Lachie Burt and Issiah Vambucca giving their counterparts a hard day. Ryan controlled the back line with Diego and Will putting in solid performances, allowing the midfield to push forward. We managed to get the ball out to the right and once again Harry was onto it like a flash. He took on the fullback and as he approached the keeper pushed the ball under the keeper for a 1-0 lead. In the second half we made a few changes, to maintain the momentum and gave the boys a well deserved rest. Jayden replaced Diego at right back and Rhys came on the right and Isaiah moved to middle mid-field replacing Brodie. We continued where we left off and as the game progressed gaps started to appear down both flanks. Jacob came on replacing the tireless Lachie. With fresh legs both Jacob and Rhys begun to create attacking chances, when Gianni passed the ball wide to Rhys, he crossed the ball to Harry who jinxced around in the box to create himself a chance and fired off a venomous shot, the keeper could only parry the ball out where the lively Jacob Seeto coolly slotted the ball back past the keeper for a 2-0 lead. With a few minutes left Gianni slipped back into a more defensive role and the boys held out until the final whistle. The boys were overwhelmed with emotion and all rushed onto the pitch to start the celebrations, waving to their proud parents and the fans who stayed on to watch them. A great day all round and the boys receiving their just rewards for an excellent team performance. Neil Davies Strikers Cup Coach

Anniversary Win for Super Strikers |
In this the 30th year of the Strikers Cup, the host team have made history by winning the Strikers Cup - CC Strikers Under 9s beating Queens Park 2-0 in the final of the competition. The win marked the first outright for the Collaroy Cromer Strikers (formed when the Cromer Strikers and Collaroy Plateau clubs combined in the early 1990s), the former Cromer Strikers having won the event in 1982, while CC Strikers shared the trophy in 2004. The win capped a day of big crowds, fine footballing weather, great organisation from the Strikers committee, competitive sporting achievement from the 28 teams participating and, best of all, spectacular football from the young players. Over the entire day there were 101 goals over the 49 games. Among Manly Warringah teams, Strikers were the only local club to make the knock-out stage. However, the year saw a marked improvement in the performance of local teams. Seaforth were in the running for a quarter-final berth after winning their first two games, only to go down 0-1 in their final group game against eventual semi-finalists the Gunners (from the Macarthur district). Forest Killarney also performed well in a competitive group that also featured the fancied Winston Hills and Canterbury teams. Unbeaten on the day, Forest Killarney recorded goalless draws with both of the out-of-area teams, results that led to them narrowly missing out on qualification to the knock-out stage and also contributed to the Canterbury side bowing out of the competition on goal difference. Other than Strikers; Harbord Seasiders, Wakehurst and Seaforth each recorded wins over out-of-area teams, the Seasiders with a 2-0 win over Kissing Point and Wakehurst and Seaforth with wins over Moorebank. Early group games suggested favourites for the day, with 2007 winners Smithfield RSL, Fairfield Hotspurs and Gunners each winning their three group games and the always competitive Castle Hill United qualifying from their group with two wins and a draw. Paired up in the Quarter Finals, Gunners beat Fairfield 1-0 while Smithfield RSL progressed on a countback of corners after a 1-1 draw with Castle Hill. After a 0-0 draw in their first game with West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, Queens Park got their scoring boots on with 3 and 4 nil wins in their group games against Avalon and Beacon Hill, and 3-nil wins in both their quarter and semi finals, against Winston Hills and Gunners respectively to face the host team in the final. With a high level of expectation surrounding what was reckoned to be CC Strikers strongest team in years, a confident CC Strikers team started their competition with a 4-0 win over Curl Curl (with two goals each from Jesper Nicholson and Gianni Stensness), followed by a 3-1 win over Glenhaven (with goals from Harry Van Der Saag, Gianni and Tal Weiner) a good outcome in a game that was closer than the score suggests, CC Strikers defending a succession of corners and chances from their opponents late in the game. Going in to a must-win final group game against a strong Budgewoi team (winners of both their group games and unbeaten in their Central Coast competition this season), CC Strikers progressed to the quarter-finals with an excellently worked headed goal from Jesper from a free kick by Gianni. In the quarter final against West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, CC Strikers certainly needed their luck as they were on the defensive in the first half - captain Ryan Martinuzzo forced to make a spectacular goalline clearance while keeper Sam Benton pulled off a fine diving save at his near post to deny the opposition. In the second half, facing elimination on the ‘corner countback’ rule, a finely struck volley from Harry won the game for the home team. In their semi final with Smithfield RSL, CC Strikers dominated the game, but couldn’t turn their possession and territorial advantage into goals. However, CC Strikers progressed to the final as a result of a ‘countback’ to each team’s quarter-final results. Encouraged by Manly United FC coach Phil Moss, a former Strikers Cup participant, prior to the final, a confident Strikers team emerged on to the field at Cromer 1 ready to make history. Forced on the defensive by Queens Park in the early stages of the game, Strikers strong defence and creative midfield began to work openings in the opponents defence. With vocal support from a substantial crowd in the venue’s Lucas Neill stand, Strikers went ahead with another goal from Harry, and doubled their lead in the second half when Jacob Seeto followed in on the goalkeeper to dispatch the winning goal to huge applause. At the close of the game, Sydney FC star Steve Corica was on hand to present the Player of the Final award to Harry Van Der Saag, the runners-up medals to the Queens Park team, the Strikers Cup trophy to captain Ryan Martinuzzo and winners’ medals to the jubilant Strikers team. Each of the team can now look back on a spectacular footballing achievement with their winners medals an item they can treasure forever. Congratulations to the team: Sam Benton, Lachie Burt, Diego Cuadros-Garrett, Jayden Lagana, Will Martin, Ryan Martinuzzo, Jesper Nicholson, Jacob Seeto, Gianni Stensness, Brody Strachan, Harry Van Der Sag, Rhys Vorillas, Isaiah Vumbaca, Tal Weiner and reserve Tyler Bowles; Coach Neil Davies; Assistant Coach Andy Snell and Manager Lucy Lagana. The 30th Strikers Cup – A Challenge for Young Soccer Players |
20th July 2008The 30th Strikers Cup is shaping us as a major event for young footballers from across Sydney and the rest of NSW. To be held at Cromer Park on Sunday 20th July 2008, the 28-team event has long been acknowledged as Australia’s premier tournament for Under 9s football teams. Hosted by the Collaroy Cromer Strikers Football Club (CC Strikers), the 11-a-side competition is held to aid the transition of young players to the senior game on a full sized pitch. For many of the participants, playing in the Strikers Cup is their first exposure to the ‘bigger’ game (under 9s in the Manly Warringah area play on nine-a-side games on a ¾ field). First staged in 1979, in 2002 the event was opened up to teams from beyond the Manly Warringah Football Association. Terrigal United from the Central Coast won the event last year and Burwood FC in 2005. CC Strikers last got their hand(s) on the trophy in 2004 – sharing the trophy with Castle Hill United after a goalless final and period of extra time. CC Strikers’ shared win in 2004 marked only the second time that the hosts have won the event – the other win dating back to 1982 when Cromer and Collaroy were separate Clubs. The then Cromer Strikers beat Beacon Hill in the Final, the Cromer team featuring a young Phil Moss, now Coach of Manly United in the Soccer NSW Vodafone Premier League. With a history of high-level competition, the Strikers Cup consists of a group phase in which all teams play three games, before the top eight teams go through to a knockout phase of quarter final, semi final and final games. “The Strikers Cup will see 28 teams of under nine players take the field in a World Cup style tournament. It will be exciting to watch these youngsters display the skills that they have developed in their short years and exciting to think that some of them may someday be representing our country emulating the feats of their heroes,” stated Adam Bevan, the Strikers Cup Coordinator. CC Strikers have selected Neil Davies to coach and Lucy Lagana to manage their team and have selected 14 players to represent the host Club: Back row: Brody Strachan, Tal Weiner, Sam Benton, Ryan Martinuzzo, Gianni Stensness, Tyler Bowles, Jesper Nicholson, Front row: Rhys Vorillas, Diego Garrot, Jacob Seeto, William Martin, Jayden Lagana, Isaiah Vumbaca, Lachlan Burt, Harry Van Der Saag.
“I am very pleased with the progress to date and the early signs are looking promising for a good run in the competition,” commented the CC Strikers Cup coach, Neil Davies. “I believe we have the ability throughout the squad as well as the heart. Throw in an element of luck as well as a fully supportive home crowd, and we will definitely have an advantage over the other teams,” he added. CC Strikers’ games will be played at: - 9.00 am on Field 2,
- 11.00am on Field 4 and
- 12.30pm on Field 1
Quarter finals start at 2.00pm and 3.00pm with the final at 4.00pm. Presentation should commence by 4.45pm. |

Football the winner at 2007 Strikers Cup |
With rain making play uncertain, a turn in the weather meant the 29th Strikers Cup, sponsored by Mimmo’s, went ahead on Sunday 1st July. And with the sun shining, all who attended and participated were part of a great football day. The morning group stage featured a collection of exciting games as local and out-of-area teams matched up. Hills Hawks notched up an early 3-0 win over 2006 finalists West Pymble, Mosman and Avalon each notched up 2-0 wins over local rivals Harbord Seasiders and BTH Raiders respectively, while Manly Vale lost 2-3 to 2006 winners Terrigal United in a nail-biting match where they were twice in the lead. Manly Vale mounted a strong challenge in the group stage, going on to beat Beacon Hill 2-0 before losing 0-1, by a late goal, to eventual quarter finalists Queens Park. Narrabeen and Mosman were also competitive but, overall, local teams struggled on the day, their lead in to playing 11-a-side football looking to have been disrupted by recent rain restricting preparation. As a result, and for the first time in the Strikers Cup, no teams from the Manly Warringah Association made the knockout stage of the competition. Tournament hosts, CC Strikers came close to making the quarter finals – finishing the group stage undefeated (with two draws and a win) and looking set to make the knockout stage until a late equaliser from Hurstville Zagreb denied them in their final group game. Early in the day, spectators and officials began to notice the quality of the Smithfield RSL team, as they notched up 10 goals in their group games. However a 2-2 draw with Kincumber saw the Southern Districts team reach the quarter finals as best runners-up. In the quarter-finals Smithfield put on a remarkable performance to beat Hills Hawks 5-0. Other quarter-finals saw AC United beat Queens Park 2-0, Lugarno progress on a countback of corners after a 1-1 draw with Lugarno and Kincumber beat Ramsgate 2-0. St George District team Ramsgate deserving special mention as they entered the competition at 24-hours notice after the late withdrawal of Roseville. Semi finals saw both Kincumber and Smithfield RSL record 1-0 wins – Kincumber’s win coming from a last minute penalty. A replay of their first (drawn) group game, the final between Kincumber and Smithfield RSL saw some quality football from both teams. With one of the finest displays of Strikers Cup football ever seen at Cromer Park, the Smithfield team scored a goal in each half to win the final. Showing great positional sense and constant running to give their players on the ball a range of attacking options, Smithfield attacked with exuberance while also covering effectively when Kincumber had the ball. The Southern Districts team were deserved recipients of the Strikers Cup trophy. Among a team of strong performers, Smithfield’s Ethan Tsiribas was named ‘player of the tournament’. Click here for results from the day. Click here for group tables and winners. And our own CC Strikers team was coached by David McLean and managed by Jodie Austen and comprised: Mikey Austen, Lewis Baker, Sam Brooker, Daniel Ferreira (goalkeeper), Sam Gair, Thomas Garland, Matt Grenot, Louis Hannon, Ryan McLean, Jack Nihill, Luke Obeid, Nicholas Parker, Ben Sheppard and Thomas Van Bokhoven.

2006 Strikers Cup Shines |

After a week of rain the sun shone on the 28th Strikers Cup on Sunday 30th July - and the performances of the Under 9s players who gathered at Cromer Park were also shining as the event witnessed some very skilful young footballers playing to the very highest standards. The morning group stage saw some top quality football. Early favourites Saints United scored 10 goals and conceded none in wining their three group games, while West Pymble also notched up maximum points with three wins. Close games in the competition’s very own, World Cup style, ‘group of death' pitted former winners Pittwater, Queens Park and Terrigal United with local powerhouse Wakehurst. Wakehurst just lost out to Queens Park (1-2) in one of the tightest games of the day with Terrigal United heading the group, being the other team recording three wins. Among local teams, BTH Raiders were the only team to make the qualifying rounds, topping a very tight group with two wins and a score draw, while Narrabeen narrowly missed out on qualifying for the knockout stages on goal difference after a win and two draws. Strikers were another not to exit their group, finishing runners-up to Leichhardt Tigers after a win and two draws. The hosts had started the day brightly with a high quality 3-0 win over Harbord Seasiders but close chances and the intervention of a post on two occasions robbed them of wins in their other games. Presentations to all the non-finalists were made by Manly United FC Coach and local football legend Phil Moss. The quarter finals saw Saints United beat Roseland Raptors 4-0, West Pymble beat Fairfield Hotspurs 2-0, Leichhardt Tigers beat AC United 2-0 and Terrigal United beat BTH Raiders 2-0. As the tension rose a close semi final between West Pymble and Leichhardt Tigers finished scoreless after extra time – the winner, West Pymble, being decided on corners awarded in their quarter final as both team’s were equal in other areas of the competition’s countback rules. In the other semi final Terrigal United kept their composure and played some sparkling football in beating Saints United 2-1. In the final Terrigal United scored two quick goals to take a significant early lead before West Pymble finished the first half with a goal. An open second half remained scoreless and saw the Central Coast side lift the trophy for the second time in five years. 'Player of the tournament' was Terrigal’s Daniel Tuddenham. The 28th Strikers Cup was another magnificent event – celebrating all that is best about sub-junior football. The event was played in very good spirit with the winners and all other teams not only being very talented but also displaying the highest standards of behaviour and sportsmanship. Thanks are due to all the players, coaches, parents, officials and Clubs for supporting the event. Thanks are also due to the Manly Warringah Football Association for their support of the event, to the referees (many of whom refereed Strikers Cup games rather than MWFA competition fixtures) and to all the volunteers within the Collaroy Cromer Strikers Football Club for their tireless efforts that made the event possible. The Strikers Cup - Australia's largest Under 9s football event |
Hosted by the Collaroy Cromer Strikers FC, the 11-a-side competition is held to aid the transition of young players to the senior game on a full sized pitch. For many of the participants, playing in the Strikers Cup is their first exposure to the 'bigger' game - Under 9s in the Manly Warringah Football (Soccer) Association (MWFA) play nine-a-side games on a 'three quarter' field. In 2006, the 28th Strikers Cup is shaping us as a major event for young footballers from across Sydney and the rest of NSW. First staged in 1979, Seaforth was the first club to win the event, and Beacon Hill have won the event on the most occasions, being eight times. As the reputation of the Strikers Cup grew we saw many teams from outside the Manly Warringah Football (Soccer) Association region compete, and each year we see a high level of skills. During the life of the Strikers Cup, the hosts of the event had only won the competition once, back in 1982 when Cromer and Collaroy (joined since 1995 as the Collaroy Cromer Strikers) were separate teams. Cromer beat Beacon Hill in the 1982 Final, the Cromer team featuring a young Phil Moss, now Coach of Manly United in the Soccer NSW Vodafone Premier League. In 2004 the host got their hands on the trophy again when they shared 1st place with Castle Hill United while in 2005 Burwood beat Marrickville in the final. |

Another Great Strikers Cup - 2005 |
Sunday’s 27th Under 9s Strikers Cup has once again served up a wonderful display of junior football. Held at Cromer Park, Dee Why (northern beaches) on Sunday 31st July 2005, and contested by 28 teams from across Sydney and the Central Coast, the tournament was won by Burwood, who beat rivals Marrickville 1-0 in the final. Of the local teams, hosts, and 2004 joint trophy holders, the Collaroy Cromer Strikers (CC Strikers) went furthest in the competition, losing 2-0 to Burwood in a tight semi final. Marrickville beat 2003 winners Terrigal United in the other semi final. Other teams that made the knockout stages, but fell in the quarter-finals, were Mosman, Parklea, Earlwood and Eastern Suburbs. The Strikers Cup trophy was presented to Burwood players by Sydney FC star Steve Corica. Steve, along with other star players from the new Hyundai A-League team (Andrew Packer, Alex Salazar, Ian Fyfe, Justin Pasfield and Jacob Timpano), were also on hand to present trophies to all participants. In addition, Steve Corica presented the 'player of the tournament' award to Vincent Giannini the striker for Burwood Soccer Club, the tournament winners. Earlier in the day, local soccer legends Robbie Slater and Phil Moss had been on hand to kick off the first game, Avalon v Forest Killarney – Slater’s son featuring in the Forest Killarney line-up and showing some flashes of skills similar to those of his father through the game.
